About ANWIC
The Asian Network of Women in Communication is a collective of women’s communication groups from 13 countries, committed to the advancement of women’s access to and representation in the media. ANWIC initiates a program of training, networking and advocacy activities in order to sensitize the public on media and gender issues and to promote women’s communication rights. It also seeks to empower women through the production of their own media and through research and action programs.
First set up in India in 1993, ANWIC was a continuation of the Women’s Desk successfully initiated in Manila in 1989. Both the Philippine and India bases of the women’s network grew out of the expressed need to expand the WACC-sponsored awareness-raising and workshop training conducted not only in Madras and Manila but also in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and Thailand. In 1999, Manipal Institute of Communications in Mangalore became the base for the ANWIC secretariat. In 2005, the secretariat returned to Manila, with the Communication Foundation for Asia as its base.
